Founded in 1983, Journey House provides emotional support and guidance, as well as financial aid to help them with the cost of attending college and vocational schools. The strategic plan is designed to address the unprecedented transformation that is occurring in how treatment programs will be accredited and how outcomes will be measured. Building upon Eggleston’s legacy of inclusiveness by welcoming all ethnicities, genders and gender identifications, the agency will shift additional resources to trauma informed care. The range of services offered in our continuum of care enables us to meet the challenges of promoting safety, stability and well-being for children, youth and families. Additional resources will focus on increasing the number of licensed therapists, reduce the ratio of child care staff to youth, increase trauma-informed trainings; and making existing treatment facilities more home-like.
In 2020, the most recent year figures are available, police returned children to such facilities 23,000 times, or eight times per youth. The state’s count for children living in group homes has dropped from 3,655 to 1,727 since the law took effect in 2017, but the state has failed to recruit enough foster families to house the displaced youths. DCFS partners closely with local Foster Family Agencies (FFAs) to ensure children who cannot remain safely in their home have the highest quality caregivers.
